President's Message - June 2005 NewsLink

InSight Members are Becoming More Motivated, Becoming Involved

Cyndi Jones

It's no secret…the temperature is rising - summer is here! I was excited to pack away my warm clothes and am even more thrilled to make use of all of my summer belongings. Whether it be gardening, swimming or just taking a walk, I can't wait to get outdoors. With longer days and more sunshine, it seems more feasible to accomplish all of the day's tasks, and sometimes more!

I began thinking about my increased summer productivity as I sat down to write this message to you. I decided to challenge myself: From this point forward, along with my regular activities, I will try at least one new venture each month. I have not yet decided what my undertaking will be for June, but I am considering joining a new club, trying my hand at a new culinary cuisine or simply trying a new warm weather activity. Whatever the case may be, I challenge each of you to do the same: Get involved!

There are many places for you to explore and a variety of ways to hone your skills. One place, however, may be the perfect place to start. We all know that InSight is a volunteer-led organization. Without the help of our dedicated volunteers, we would not have the organization that we have today. Additionally, these same leaders would not have cultivated their professional lives in the same way.

You may wonder why I have been mentioning professional involvement and leadership so frequently in my messages this year. Simply stated, it is because I sincerely believe in it.

Volunteerism is a tremendously rewarding experience and I encourage each of you to experience its benefits. Think of volunteering with InSight as a non-paid, no-expense investment in your career, where you will be able to try new things, explore new roles and challenge yourself. Many of your colleagues are already making this professional investment. In fact, just last month, the Nominating Committee announced a preliminary slate of candidates to the membership. These volunteers are paving the way for success in our organizations' future. Do you see yourself on this list in the future?

This is your organization - why not make the most of it? I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, "Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do."

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to hearing about the new activities you are trying.

Enjoy your summer!
