Physician Utilization and Practice Variation
Wed, March 11, 2025 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM CDT
The cost of waste and inefficiency associated with unexplained variations in care was estimated by NEHI in 2010 to be $179 billion. Variation in care is typically driven by practice variation by a few outlier physicians within an organization. If this variation can be identified, quantified, and reduced, the organization can reduce costs and improve clinical outcomes.
The discussion will include the governance structures, the analytics tools, communication mechanisms, and the change management/performance improvement programs that each organization put in place to reduce variations in care and physician utilization.
By attending this presentation, attendees will be able to:
• Describe physician practice variation and its impact on cost and clinical outcomes.
• Demonstrate specific analytics methodologies for identifying outlier physicians.
• Explain several ways to engage physicians in changing practices and reducing variation through robust performance analytics.
