Meaningful Use for EHRs, Stimulus Funds Take ShapeOn June 16, the federal Health IT Policy Committee Workgroup released its initial recommendations for defining meaningful use of electronic health records (EHRs). Providers must demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHRs in order to qualify for funds under the economic stimulus legislation. McKesson attended the meeting and submitted feedback and comments by the June 26 deadline. There are many steps remaining and the final rule on meaningful use is not expected until early 2010. As the definition evolves, McKesson will continue to participate in the discussion and keep our customers informed. In addition, McKesson remains committed to assisting all of our customers in completing the upgrades and implementations necessary to help ensure readiness during the timeframe that stimulus incentives are available. Be sure to attend the Annual InSight Conference for updates on McKessons inpatient clinical and ambulatory EHR strategies. McKesson Announces New Touch-Screen Driven Medication Dispensing SolutionMcKesson recently introduced Anesthesia-Rx, an advanced anesthesia cart with a medication-dispensing process that is entirely touch-screen driven. Virtual pocket technology provides a visual roadmap that guides users to the medications location within the drawer, eliminating the need to type and search. With only two touches, anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists have quick access to the medications and narcotics they need, when they need them in the operating room. Anesthesia-Rx is installed at Clarion Hospital in Clarion, Pa., and Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point, N.J., both of which are experiencing very positive results. The solution accurately tracks patient charges and gives the pharmacy visibility into inventory levels to ensure rapid medication and narcotics replenishment. Additionally, Anesthesia-Rx is the only cart with a syringe label printer option which automates the printing of critical medication information for regulatory compliance and improved safety.
