This course provides participants with an introductory-level knowledge of the Health Level 7 messaging standard. Topics include: HL7 and the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, HL7 message components, HL7 delimiters, HL7 acknowledgements, and Minimal Lower Layer Protocol (MLLP). Topics to be included:

Explain how HL7 relates to the OSI model
- Identify the components of an HL7 message
- List and describe the components of the MSH (Message Header) segment of an HL7 message
- List and describe fundamental HL7 data types
- Explain the anatomy of HL7 acknowledgments
- Explain why and when HL7 acknowledgements are used
